Stuart Butler shares his interest in Political Activism in the 1800s led by people of colour and discusses Robert Wedderburn, William Davidson and William Cuffay. The Robert Wedderburn story was introduced to Last Legs Dance Theatre by Stuart Butler. Peter Anderson met him for a coffee in Cheltenham in 2019 and was asked if he would do a one-man show at the Stroud Theatre Festival. The story of Robert Wedderburn inspired Peter to take on this untold story and deliver it to an audience that has an interest in Political History. He was joined by Maire-Louise Flexen to perform a half an hour piece. Since the first performance of this piece, society has become more conscious of Black British History owing to the protests of Black Lives Matter which became prominent around the world.

Danny and I have been friends for over 35 years. We find ourselves in later life sharing a passion for the story of Robert Wedderburn and how his influence for fighting slavery and supporting equality for the poor has made an impact on the rights that we enjoy today. We discuss how this Black British History was kept hidden from our standard education. and what it means to engage with stories such as the Robert Wedderburn story to inform us more about our past and what this means for our future in a multi-cultural society.

Willford Lawson talks about being a stowaway on the banana boat from Jamaica to England, an important part of Black British History. There has been a long history of Jamaican's coming to the UK to make it their home. In this interview, Willford shares his story about crossing the Atlantic. Although this is a modern story in comparison to Robert Wedderburn's time I feel his story still gives a sense of this deep connection between England and Jamaica.

I was excited to talk with Martin Hoyles about Robert Wedderburn, the Political Activist from the 1800s of Jamaican/Scottish heritage. The reason for this excitement is that Martin's book, (The Axe Laid to the Root/The Story fo Robert Wedderburn), was the first text that introduced me into Black British History of the 1800s. This convinced me of the need to produce this into a Dance Theatre Production in Stroud. As I researched this era in England I found that some of the available text on Black History was limited to academic writing. It is my hope that the words from Robert Wedderburn's book will now be translated into movement. Giving alternative ways to learn about Black British History.
